Hi, I’m Jo. My husband John and I owned a small organic farm near Austin, Texas and recently shut down our stands for good. After 14 years working six days per week at approximately 300 hours per day, we’ve moved to the beautiful Pacific Northwest where we’re trying our darnedest to learn what “retirement” means. It’s going to take some practice, yet I think we’re up for the challenge.

  1. Jo, I’ve been thinking about you all for several weeks now…..just about everytime I drive north on Jollyville and pass the old farm stand location. Now, I’ve just spent about an hour reading all about the wonderful fun you are having. Sounds like the house will be perfect for you both and that there will be plenty of room to do some “retirement gardening”. So happy that Angel Valley sold so quickly and that they are going to keep the name.
Plan on me looking in on your blog often now that I know where you are and a little bit about what you are doing. Thanks, Taffy

    • It was indeed swell, Lisa! Thank you. I thought about you yesterday — and I hope you had an equally fine time!

  2. Good luck with the whole shebang. I’m from Texas and currently doing time in Virginia. We visited Seattle and Mt. Rainier last week and it was pretty close to heaven. My husband and I are teetering on the brink of retirement also.

    • We haven’t been here long enough yet to experience a Washington winter, but so far it is indeed as close to heaven as anyplace we’ve been. I highly recommend you teeter this direction!

  3. I cannot BELIEVE the comment line isn’t longer! I LOVED your 7th Generation toilet paper tale… but this one is absolutely priceless, too. My emotional triggers in the movies, “BABE” and “Charlotte’s Web” really come to mind here. I howled at the signage of the store (ruthless competitors at branding could learn something pretty fundamental here!!!)

But, girl. Ya gotta rethink that list of heart’s desires, i.e.: retirement, baby, sleeping in. Those three items explode in three entirely different directions in MY head. No mix. None. Uh-uh.

SOOOO looking forward to your next story. I wish they’d Press THIS ONE!!

    • Ha ha!! I bet it did indeed sound like a baby was one of my desires. Nosirree! I meant it as “hey baby” or “oooo baby” all the way. No tiny humans for me, thank you. Sleeping in and eventual retirement, though…bring ’em on!

Thank you rubble2bubble! I love the comment. I’ll soon be on my way to check out your blog as well — looking forward to it!

      • That was worth a chuckle all over again. You have NO IDEA how relieved I am. All is right with my world. Do visit. And, have fun.

  4. We miss you Jo and John! Think about you all the time! So happy when I see your blog posts-they make me smile…. BTW, what’s your email address (if it’s not top-secret :-} )

  5. Hi Jo (and John)…glad I came across your blog. I am a ‘fellow-ine’ Pickleball player – you could call me addicted in a positive way. Not sure where in Washington you are but If ever you are inclined to trek across the border into South Surrey, BC, Canada you will find a huge group of people who meet regularly to play – minus all the snowbirds in winter months. Welcome to the game.

    • Well hello Valerie! Isn’t pickleball crazy addictive? I never dreamed we’d go so bonkers over it. We’re in Port Townsend, WA and do indeed plan to take some trips to BC this summer, so perhaps we’ll make it to the South Surrey area. We’ll bring our rackets!

      • …a little slow on the draw here. Didn’t notice your response to my note. Please do step across the line and visit in Sunny South Surrey. You’ll land in s.s. first if you cross in Blaine area…do let me know.
Lots of beach area to sit and write…Val…

  6. Hi,
I am a long lost friend of Taffy Gauger from Laurinburg, NC and am trying to get in touch with her again. If you have her contact information, please let her know that Bunny Lancaster is trying to call or email her. (910-321-9180)

Thank you for your help and I hope you are enjoying your retirement.

  7. Oh gosh, thank you Gaines. I started working part-time about a year-and-a-half ago and I just can’t seem to find the time to post anything. That, or I’ve just gotten lazy about it…one of the two. I keep thinking I’m going to pick it back up again, so who knows? I sure appreciate you checking in. Maybe it’ll give me the push I need. I hope all is well with you!
